Proprio del Baltic Index abbiamo parlato non più tardi di qualche giorno fa. Ma oggi, una settimana dopo all’ultimo aggiornamento, è il caso di andare a rivedere il Baltic Index. Come mai? Perché il tracollo non sembra fermarsi. 42 giorni di discesa. Il risultato è decisamente sconfortante. –54%.

Vien da chiedersi se questo crollo sia legato solo ad un violentissimo rallentamento dei movimenti commerciali cinesi… oppure da una serie di attentati che hanno affossato flotte di navi cargo…oppure gli yacht degli arabi, vista la crisi, si sono dati al trasporto dei container inondando il mercato di offerta. Scherzi a parte, i motivi sembrano più legati a fattori decisamente più commerciali.

“The underlying constant is that we have a massive amount of newbuilding,” Jeffrey Landsberg, president of New York-based shipping consultants Commodore Research, said by phone today.
Shipping costs are falling also because fewer carriers are being delayed at ports, a result of reduced charters three weeks ago, Landsberg said. Cheaper freight costs are encouraging traders to ship consignments over longer distances and hire more ships, which will boost freight rates within “one to two weeks,” he added. The Baltic Dry Index has plunged 54 percent since starting a 30-session descent on May 27. That’s the largest percentage drop since November 2008, when reduced demand from Chinese steelmakers for iron ore and a lack of trade finance cut the supply of cargoes.
